Las Peñitas is a fishing village on a long Pacific beach about 20 minutes from León. It has an easygoing, barefoot feel, and the Juan Venado island reserve behind it is a mangrove nature reserve where kayak trips look for birds and nesting turtles.
The hotels are small, family-run and a few steps from the sand. Expect a handful of cabins or rooms, a garden pool and a restaurant, rather than polish. They suit travelers who want a beach break after León's heat without the commitment of a long transfer.
The beach has strong currents, so swim where locals do and ask your hotel. Sea turtle hatchlings are released between July and December. Surf lessons are available. Buses and taxis run from León, so you can easily combine the two in one trip.
