Mombasa has been a trading port for more than a thousand years. Its Old Town is a tangle of narrow streets, carved balconies and spice shops, guarded by Fort Jesus, a 16th-century Portuguese fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site. The beaches of Nyali and Bamburi lie to the north, and Diani to the south.

Most visitors stay on the beaches north or south of the city; the island itself has only a few small hotels.

The Madaraka Express train connects Mombasa and Nairobi in about five hours. The Old Town is best explored with a local guide.
