Lake Turkana stretches for about 180 miles through the deserts of northern Kenya. Known as the Jade Sea for its color, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its volcanic islands, its crocodiles and the fossil beds at Koobi Fora, where key discoveries about human origins were made. The town of Loiyangalani, on the eastern shore, is home to the El Molo, Samburu, Rendille and Turkana peoples.
Accommodation is basic: simple camps and lodges in Loiyangalani. Most visitors come on an organized expedition or a charter flight.
