Kilifi
A sociable eco-lodge and backpackers near the creek with compost toilets and a community focus.
Kilifi sits on a deep creek that winds inland from the Indian Ocean, lined with baobabs and old houses. It has a relaxed community of artists, sailors and kitesurfers, the Swahili ruins of Mnarani and Takaungu nearby, and long beaches at Bofa. The creek is ideal for paddleboarding and boat trips at sunset.
Accommodation is mostly private villas and cottages on the creek, plus a few eco-lodges and guesthouses.
Kilifi is about an hour north of Mombasa. The Kilifi New Year festival draws a crowd; otherwise the town is quiet.
