Yufuin, in Oita on the island of Kyushu, is quieter and more rural than nearby Beppu. Morning mist rises from Lake Kinrin, rice fields surround the town, and the main street is lined with galleries, cafés and craft shops. Its ryokan tend to be small, with separate villas and private open-air baths.
The best ryokan are spread across the hillsides and fields outside the town center, which is the point: quiet, views of Mount Yufu and baths of your own.
The Yufuin no Mori train runs from Fukuoka in about two and a half hours. Small ryokan fill quickly, so book two to three months ahead.
