Shirakawa-go
A simple farmhouse inn of five tatami rooms, about two centuries old, a short walk uphill from the bus station.
Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage village in the Japanese Alps, is famous for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses, whose steep thatched roofs resemble hands joined in prayer. The village fills with day-trippers, so staying overnight in a family-run farmhouse inn is the best way to see it calm.
Accommodation is in minshuku: simple, family-run farmhouse inns with shared facilities, tatami rooms and home-cooked meals around a sunken hearth. Ainokura in nearby Gokayama is smaller and quieter.
Rooms are few and book out months ahead, especially for the winter illumination evenings in January and February. Many inns take cash only.
