03
Nikko
Japan's oldest resort hotel, founded in 1873, a few minutes from Toshogu, with a classic French restaurant.
Nikko is home to Toshogu, the lavishly decorated mausoleum of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, set among towering cedars and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Above the town, the Irohazaka hairpin road climbs to Lake Chuzenji, the Kegon Falls and the hot springs of Okunikko.
The town by the Shinkyo bridge is convenient for the shrines. Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen are cooler and quieter, and the Kinugawa and Yunishigawa valleys hold riverside ryokan.
Nikko is about two hours from Tokyo by train. Autumn colors in October are spectacular and draw heavy traffic on weekends.
