Kinosaki Onsen
A quieter sister property set in the forest just outside town, with a shuttle to the bathhouses.
Kinosaki, on the Sea of Japan coast, is the perfect onsen town: willow-lined canals, stone bridges and seven public bathhouses that guests visit in the evening wearing the cotton robes and clogs provided by their inn. It has inspired writers for more than a century and remains one of the most atmospheric places to experience a ryokan.
The ryokan in town give you a free pass to all seven public baths. Most include dinner, and in winter that means the famous Matsuba snow crab.
Kinosaki is about two and a half hours by train from Kyoto or Osaka. Crab season runs from November to March and is the busiest time.
