02
Kamakura
A 14-room hotel a few steps from the beach at Koshigoe, near Enoshima.
Kamakura was Japan's capital in the 12th and 13th centuries, and its wooded hills are dotted with Zen temples, shrines and hiking trails. The Great Buddha, cast in bronze, sits in the open air at Kotoku-in, while Yuigahama and Shichirigahama beaches draw surfers and day-trippers.
Most visitors come from Tokyo for the day, so staying overnight lets you enjoy the temples in the quiet of early morning. Yuigahama, near the beach, has the most character.
The little Enoden railway runs along the coast to Enoshima. Hydrangea season in June is beautiful but very busy.
