Fukuoka
A landmark postmodern design hotel by Aldo Rossi in the Nakasu area, near the river.
Fukuoka is one of Japan's most livable cities: compact, close to the sea and devoted to food. Evening yatai street stalls along the Naka River serve ramen, yakitori and oden, and the Tenjin and Daimyo districts are full of cafés, boutiques and bars.
Hakata, around the station, is the practical base for trains. Tenjin and Daimyo are livelier, with the best restaurants and nightlife. Boutique hotels are scarcer here than in Tokyo or Kyoto.
The airport is minutes from the center by subway. Fukuoka is a good gateway to Yufuin, Nagasaki and the rest of Kyushu.
