Banff

Banff National Park, founded in 1885, is Canada's oldest and most famous park, with glacier-fed lakes such as Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, the Icefields Parkway and forests full of elk, bears and bighorn sheep. The town of Banff is small and lively, with hot springs and a gondola, while Lake Louise is quieter and closer to the high mountains.
Banff town is the most convenient base, with restaurants and shops. Lake Louise and the remote lodges in the backcountry are better for those who want to be among the peaks.
Summer is busy and access to Moraine Lake is by shuttle or tour only. September is quieter and often beautiful, and winter brings three ski areas. A park pass is required.
