Prince Edward Island
Chef Michael Smith's country inn in eastern PEI, known for its live-fire FireWorks feast.
Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province, a rolling island of farmland, red sandstone cliffs and long beaches on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is famous for its oysters, mussels and potatoes, and as the setting of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables. Charlottetown, the capital, is a small, historic city.
Charlottetown has the most hotels and restaurants. The north shore and PEI National Park have beaches and inns by the sea, and the east coast around Souris is quieter still.
Summer and early autumn are the main seasons, with the PEI Fall Flavours festival in September. The island is reached by the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick or by ferry from Nova Scotia.
