Gizo
A simple, pleasant resort on Lola Island without air conditioning, a base near Skull Island and the surf.
Gizo is the second-largest town in the Solomon Islands and the main base for the Western Province, a small harbor of wooden houses, a market and dive shops. The Gizo area has reefs and WWII wrecks, surf at nearby breaks, and the Kennedy Island, where John F. Kennedy's PT-109 crew swam ashore in 1943. Skull Island, where the skulls of chiefs are kept, is another excursion.
Fatboys Resort, on Mbabanga Island about ten minutes by boat from Gizo, has overwater bungalows, a dive shop and an overwater bar and restaurant, though most rooms have no air conditioning and it runs on island time. Sanbis Resort, on the same island, is adults only. Zipolo Habu Resort, on Lola Island near Munda, is mentioned as a base for Skull Island and the surf. Budget guesthouses in town include Phoebe's Rest House and Rekona Lodge.
One package listing priced seven nights at Fatboys from AUD 2,599 per person, but prices change. Flights from Honiara serve Gizo.
