Marovo Lagoon, in the Western Province, is a vast, double-barrier lagoon with over a hundred islands, wooded channels and pale sand cays, and it is a candidate for World Heritage status. Villages of stilted houses stand on the shores, and the people of Marovo are famed for their ebony and kerosene-wood carvings. Kayaks and dugout canoes are the way to see it.
Uepi Island Resort is the most-cited, a barrier-reef bungalow resort at the lagoon's edge. Driftwood Eco Lodge, Matikuri Lodge and Mavo Lodge are three village-stay lodges linked by boat transfers in an 11-night package. Ropiko Resort on Gatokae Island is a family-run, part locally owned resort, and Kajoro Sunset Lodge in Telina appears on booking sites.
