Tavira · 5 rooms
A restored 18th-century house on Jardim da Alagoa with five rooms and a small saltwater courtyard pool.
Tavira straddles the Gilão River near the Spanish border and feels far removed from the busier western Algarve. Its old center is full of churches, tiled façades and pyramid-shaped rooftops, and a castle garden offers views over the town. Ferries cross the Ria Formosa lagoon to Ilha de Tavira, a long sandy island beach.
The historic center has small hotels in restored houses, while the countryside toward Cacela Velha and Conceição has rural retreats among orange and olive groves.
The eastern Algarve is warmer and calmer than the west, with the sea a few degrees warmer in summer. Seafood is excellent, particularly octopus from nearby Santa Luzia.
