Comporta

A retreat among cork oaks and pines, with villas, a natural pool, a spa and a farm-to-table restaurant.
Comporta is a scattering of small villages on the peninsula south of Setúbal, where rice paddies, cork oaks and dunes run down to a long, quiet beach. Once a simple fishing and farming area, it became a discreet retreat for Lisbon's creative crowd, and its hotels follow the same low-key, design-minded style.
Most hotels sit in the countryside between the villages, in thatched cabins, timber villas or restored farm buildings. A car is essential, as beaches, restaurants and villages are spread out.
Comporta is about an hour's drive from Lisbon, or a short ferry from Setúbal to Tróia. Summer is busy and booked far ahead; spring and early autumn are quieter, and the beaches are still warm enough to enjoy. Restaurants on the sand at Praia do Carvalhal and Comporta beach are part of the appeal.
