Douro Valley
A riverside hotel in Pinhão in a former wine lodge, with a pool and its own wine bar.
The Douro is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, the source of port and of increasingly fine dry reds and whites. Its steep slopes are carved into stone terraces that follow the river for miles, and its quintas range from grand historic estates to small family vineyards.
Pinhão and Peso da Régua are the main hubs, and most of the best hotels are wine estates set among the vines above them. Many include tastings, vineyard walks and dinners with their own wines.
The drive from Porto takes about two hours; the scenic train along the river is a fine alternative. The harvest in September and early October is the most atmospheric time to visit. Summers are very hot in the valley, so a hotel with a pool is welcome.
