Lagos (Algarve)

A seaside hotel with a subtropical garden on the cliffs outside town, extended over the years from a family villa.
Lagos combines a lively historic center with one of the most dramatic stretches of the Algarve coast. Just outside town, the ochre cliffs of Ponta da Piedade are cut into arches, grottoes and small beaches reached by stairs or by kayak. Inside the old walls, cobbled lanes lead to cafés, seafood restaurants and the church of Santo António.
The old town is best for walking to restaurants and the marina, while hotels on the edge of town have more space, gardens and pools. Beaches such as Dona Ana and Camilo are a short walk or drive away.
Lagos is busy in July and August. The cliffs and boat trips are best in calm weather, and the wilder west coast at Sagres is under an hour's drive.
