Vík
A boutique hotel on the Atlantic coast, a drive from Vík, with sea views and a quiet, remote setting.
Vík í Mýrdal is the southernmost village in Iceland, framed by green hills, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and some of the country's most photographed black-sand beaches. It makes a natural overnight stop between Reykjavík and the glacier lagoons, and a handful of design-minded hotels have opened to serve it.
Hotel Vík í Mýrdal and Hotel Kría sit in or just outside the village, a short drive from Reynisfjara. Both pair modern, minimalist rooms with a restaurant using local ingredients. Further east and west, farm hotels and country lodges offer more space.
Sea waves on Reynisfjara can be dangerous: stay well back from the water. Rooms in summer sell out far ahead, and in winter the road can close in storms, so keep plans flexible. Puffins nest on the cliffs from May to August.
