Lisbon is built on seven hills, and its best small hotels make the most of them. In Alfama, the oldest quarter, rooms look over a tangle of lanes and church domes to the river. Príncipe Real and Chiado are more polished, with antique shops, gardens and some of the city's best restaurants, while Santa Apolónia and Cais do Sodré sit close to the water.
Alfama and Mouraria suit travelers who want atmosphere and fado bars on the doorstep. Príncipe Real and Chiado are calmer and central, and Baixa is flat and well connected but busier.
The hills are steep and the cobbles slippery, so comfortable shoes matter. Many boutique hotels occupy old buildings with small elevators or none at all. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; summer is warm, lively and crowded.
