Óbidos is one of Portugal's best-preserved medieval villages, enclosed by walls you can walk around for views over terracotta roofs and the surrounding countryside. Its main street is lined with bougainvillea, bookshops and bars serving ginja, the local cherry liqueur, often in chocolate cups.
Staying inside the walls lets you enjoy the village in the evening after the day-trippers leave. Country houses outside town offer more space and pools.
The village is about an hour north of Lisbon. It hosts popular events, including a chocolate festival and a Christmas village, which draw large crowds. The Óbidos Lagoon and the beaches of Foz do Arelho and Baleal are a short drive away.
