Santorini

A pioneering hotel in 300-year-old cave houses in Oia, with a much-photographed infinity pool on the caldera rim.

Santorini is the remnant of a volcanic island that collapsed into the sea around 3,600 years ago, leaving a sheer caldera wall more than 1,000 feet high. Its villages of white cave houses and blue domes, notably Oia, Imerovigli and Firostefani, line the rim, while black-sand beaches and vineyards fill the gentler eastern side.

Where to stay

Oia has the most famous sunset views but is the busiest. Imerovigli, the highest village on the caldera, is quieter, and Firostefani is a short walk from Fira's restaurants.

Good to know

Caldera hotels involve many steps, so check access if mobility is a concern. Cruise ships bring large crowds by day in summer. Spring and autumn are calmer, and the island's Assyrtiko wines are worth seeking out.
