Ohrid
A well-rated hotel on Gradishte Hill with views over the old town and the lake.
Ohrid sits on the shore of a lake that is millions of years old, its old town climbing from the harbor to Samuel's Fortress. The churches of Saint Sophia and Saint John at Kaneo, perched above the water, are the town's best-known sights, and the lake itself is clear and deep enough for swimming from rocky coves and wooden jetties.
The old town's lanes and the lakeside promenade are the best places to be, with views of the water and the fortress. A few small hotels occupy traditional houses on the hill.
Ohrid is busiest in July and August; June and September are calmer and still warm. The monastery of Saint Naum, near the Albanian border, is a boat ride or short drive from the town.
