Ha'apai
A quiet, nature-focused resort on Uoleva with fales in private sections of forest, yoga, paddleboards and kayaks.
Ha'apai is a low, remote group of coral islands in the middle of the kingdom, where Captain Cook once sailed, and the pace is the slowest in Tonga. White-sand beaches, shallow lagoons and uninhabited cays are the draw, with whale-swimming operators in season and some of the Pacific's best snorkeling. Lifuka has the airport and main wharf, and Foa is joined to it by a causeway.
Sandy Beach Resort on Foa is the upscale pick, with 12 bungalows near an unspoiled beach, king beds and hot showers. Its sister resort Matafonua Lodge is family-friendly, with thatched fales and shared bathrooms. On Uoleva, Serenity Beaches Resort has fales nestled in private sections of forest with yoga and kayaks, and Sea Change Eco Retreat runs whale-swimming tours from May to October. Ha'apai Beach Resort on Lifuka is a mid-range option.
Many resorts are off the grid, with solar power. Flights from Nuku'alofa are the easiest way in. May to October is the best window.
