Fafa Island
A small resort of traditional-style fale bungalows on a private coral island, with a beachfront restaurant and free paddle boats and snorkeling gear.
Fafa Island is a small coral island in the lagoon north of Nuku'alofa, ringed by reef so that swimming and snorkeling are safe. It is covered with palms and reached by a short boat from the capital, and the resort that occupies it has been the area's best-known escape for years.
Fafa Island Resort is a small boutique resort of traditional-style bungalows built from local materials, with king beds, day beds and open-air bathrooms in screened tropical gardens. Sources give 13 or 14 rooms and a maximum of 26 guests. The beachfront restaurant serves all meals, and guests can use paddle boats and snorkeling gear for free. Lonely Planet listed rooms from T$400 for a double, but that may be outdated.
The trip takes about 50 minutes by road and boat from the airport. Day-trip boats leave Faua Jetty at 11 am and return at 4:30 pm. Book at least 72 hours ahead and confirm current rates.
