Pangaimotu Island Resort

Pangaimotu

The oldest and closest of the lagoon resorts, with simple fales and a shipwreck to snorkel, damaged by Cyclone Gita in 2018; check whether it has reopened.

Pangaimotu is a small island in the lagoon off Nuku'alofa, about ten minutes by boat from the Faua Jetty and the Fish Market wharf. It is the oldest and closest of the offshore resorts, known for a shipwreck about 50 meters offshore that is a draw for snorkelers, the Big Mama Yacht Club and a small vanilla plantation.

Where to stay

Pangaimotu Island Resort offers simple fales for overnight stays, with doubles from T$100 according to Lonely Planet. It is one of few places open to visitors on Sundays, when Tongan law restricts most activity. Tropical Cyclone Gita in February 2018 damaged about 75 percent of the facility, and a fundraising campaign aimed to rebuild it; we found no report confirming whether it has fully reopened.

Good to know

Check the resort's current status with a recent source before planning a stay. For a more established island stay, Fafa Island is the alternative. The shallow water is best in the dry season from May to October.
