Khao Yai is Thailand's oldest national park and part of a UNESCO World Heritage forest complex. It has waterfalls, grasslands, gibbons, hornbills and wild elephants, and the countryside around it has become a weekend escape for Bangkok, with vineyards, farm cafés and stylish small resorts.
Most hotels lie outside the park along the roads to Pak Chong, among hills and farmland. Book a guide for early-morning wildlife drives.
The park is about three hours from Bangkok by road. The cool season from November to February is the most pleasant, and weekends are busy.
