Koh Samui is the most developed of the Gulf of Thailand islands, with an airport, good restaurants and a wide range of beaches. Chaweng is busy, Lamai livelier still, while the north coast around Bophut's Fisherman's Village and the rocky northeast tip are quieter and more refined.
Bophut and Choeng Mon on the north coast are the most pleasant bases, with calm water and good dining. The south and west coasts are sleepier, with sunsets and fewer crowds.
The Gulf islands are driest from January to August; heavy rain usually falls in October and November. Samui is a good base for day trips to Ang Thong Marine National Park.
