Phuket is Thailand's largest island, and its busy beach towns can hide how beautiful it is. The west coast has a string of bays backed by green headlands, the north is quieter, and Phuket Town has colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, a fine food scene and small heritage hotels.
Kamala, Surin and the headlands between them have the most stylish villa resorts. Mai Khao in the north is calm and close to the airport. Avoid Patong if you want peace.
The Andaman season runs from November to April; from May to October the sea can be rough and some beaches fly red flags. Phuket is the jumping-off point for Phang Nga Bay, Koh Yao Noi and the Racha islands.
