Bangkok is a sprawling, energetic city of temples, street food and rooftop bars, and its river is its most beautiful side. Along the Chao Phraya, longtail boats and ferries pass the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the spires of Wat Arun, and several small hotels occupy old houses right on the water.
The riverside around Rattanakosin and Dusit puts you close to the historic sights and the river ferries. Sukhumvit and Silom are livelier and better connected by Skytrain, with more restaurants and nightlife.
Use the river boats and Skytrain to avoid the traffic. November to February is the most comfortable season; dress modestly for temple visits.
