Lalomanu (Upolu)
Bright yellow and mint-green fales steps from Lalomanu beach, with traditional morning meals and evening barbecues.
Lalomanu is a long white-sand beach on the southeastern tip of Upolu, with a reef-protected lagoon of clear, shallow water and views of the island of Nu'utele. It was rebuilt after the 2009 tsunami and has become the most popular beach stay in the country, with a string of family-run places that offer traditional fales and a few small boutique resorts.
Litia Sini Beach Resort is a small, family-owned beachfront resort near Lalomanu with fale-style bungalows on a reef-protected bay, and is listed as a boutique option by Hotelier's Choice. Lalomanu Fale Accommodation, a family-run set of thatched beach huts with direct beach access, is the same guide's top boutique pick for Samoa. Taufua Beach Fales has brightly colored fales just steps from the beach and offers traditional morning meals and evening barbecues.
The fales are open-sided and basic, with mosquito nets and shared bathrooms in many cases, so go with the right expectations. Lalomanu is about an hour's drive from Apia. Snorkeling is good in the lagoon, and the To Sua Ocean Trench is a short drive away.
