Manase
A resort on a crystalline bay with fales and reef-facing bungalows, and tours of the lava fields, star mounds and Pulemelei.
Manase is a village on the north coast of Savai'i with a long white-sand beach, a calm lagoon and views across the Apolima Strait to Upolu. It is the island's main tourist area, though that still means just a few small places to stay, village life going on around them and an easy rhythm of swimming, snorkeling and walking.
Stevensons at Manase is the best-known resort on Savai'i, with fales and reef-facing bungalows on a crystalline bay, rated 9.1 by Hotelier's Choice. It arranges cultural tours of the nearby lava fields, star mounds and the Pulemelei ceremonial site. Simpler beach fales are found along the village shore.
The ferry from Upolu lands at Salelologa, about an hour and a half's drive away. Rent a car or hire a driver for the north coast circuit. Sundays are quiet in the villages, and visitors should dress modestly.
