Peneda-Gerês · 32 rooms
From $129/ night
A former 12th-century Cistercian monastery between Braga and the Gerês range, with an outdoor pool.
Peneda-Gerês covers a mountainous corner of northern Portugal along the Spanish border. Its granite peaks, clear rivers and waterfalls shelter wild horses, roe deer and traditional villages where cattle still graze communal pastures. Walking trails follow old Roman roads and lead to swimming holes and lookouts.
Small hotels and country houses are scattered around the park's edges, near Gerês spa town, the Caniçada reservoir and the villages of the Minho.
The park is about 90 minutes from Porto. Summer is ideal for swimming in rivers, while spring brings full waterfalls and wildflowers. Some roads are narrow and winding, and mountain weather changes quickly.
