Monsaraz
From $374/ night
A centuries-old farming estate restored by architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, with a winery, a spa, horses and pools.
Monsaraz is a medieval village of whitewashed houses and slate streets on a hill near the Spanish border. From its castle walls you can see across the Alentejo plains to the Alqueva reservoir, one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. The area is a certified Dark Sky Reserve, and stargazing is a highlight.
The village has a few guesthouses within the walls, while the best hotels are farm estates on the plains below, among vineyards and olive groves.
The Alentejo is very hot in July and August. Local wineries, the megaliths around Reguengos and boat trips on the lake are easy outings.
