Guimarães calls itself the cradle of the nation: Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, is said to have been born here. Its UNESCO-listed center is a harmonious mix of medieval squares, balconied houses and granite churches, with the castle and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza on the hill above.
Hotels in the old center put you on the squares, where students and locals gather in the evening. A cable car climbs Penha mountain for views and a former monastery hotel.
Guimarães is about an hour from Porto and pairs well with nearby Braga. The Minho region around it is known for vinho verde, a light, fresh wine.
