Coimbra was Portugal's capital in the Middle Ages and is home to a university founded in 1290. Its hilltop campus, a UNESCO World Heritage site, includes the baroque Joanina Library with its gilded shelves. Below, the old town is a maze of steep stairways, student taverns and venues for Coimbra's own style of fado, sung by men in academic robes.
The upper town puts you close to the university, while the lower town has shops and riverside cafés. Historic estates across the river offer gardens and calm.
The city is steep but compact. It lies halfway between Lisbon and Porto, about two hours from each, and makes a good stop on a road trip.
