Surama
A community-run lodge in a Makushi village with traditional benabs and cabins, guided hikes and canoe trips.
Surama is a Makushi village on the edge of the North Rupununi savanna, with rainforest mountains behind it and the Burro Burro River nearby. Its eco-lodge is run entirely by the community, and tourism provides a large share of local income. The village is a model of community-led tourism and shared a Caribbean sustainable tourism award in 2011.
The Surama Eco-Lodge has traditional benabs and newer cabins with private bathrooms, though sources differ on the number, so check with the lodge. Hot water is not a given. Guides lead hikes, canoe trips on the Burro Burro and cultural walks, and the harpy eagle nests are a highlight.
Surama is about a 90-minute drive from Iwokrama and a long road from Georgetown, so it is normally combined with Iwokrama and the Rupununi. Birdwatching is best at dawn, and rain is likely from May to August. Bring cash for guides and crafts.
