The Rupununi is a vast, open savanna in the south-west of Guyana, dotted with termite mounds, ranches and Wapishana villages, with the Kanuku Mountains on the horizon. It is some of the best wildlife country in South America, with giant anteaters, jaguars, giant river otters and large macaws. Lethem, on the Brazilian border, is the regional hub.
The lodges are ranch-style and personal. Karanambu Lodge, on the Rupununi River, is known for riverside cabanas and as the home of the conservationist Diane McTurk and her work with giant otters.
