The Iwokrama Forest Reserve covers about a million acres of rainforest in central Guyana, set aside for conservation and sustainable use. It is a stronghold for jaguars, giant river otters and black caiman, and more than 500 species of birds. The canopy walkway, high in the treetops, is one of its signature experiences, and night walks and river trips are guided by Makushi rangers.

Iwokrama River Lodge is the main base, with eight river-facing cabins, fans, private bathrooms, solar-powered electricity and a wraparound veranda. Its restaurant serves traditional Guyanese food overlooking the river, and it won a Visit Rupununi award for best lodge in 2023. Atta Rainforest Lodge is a comfortable lodge close to the canopy walkway.
Good to know
The lodge is on the Georgetown-Lethem road, a long road trip from the capital, though flights to Annai are an option. Accommodation is simple and function matters more than luxury. Take insect repellent and a rain jacket.
