Kaieteur Falls
A community-owned lodge in the Iwokrama reserve, listed as an option for visiting the Kaieteur area.
Kaieteur Falls drops 226 meters in a single leap on the Potaro River, several times the height of Niagara. It lies in Kaieteur National Park, among sandstone and forest, home to golden rocket frogs and Guianan cock-of-the-rock.
Most visitors fly in from Georgetown for a couple of hours at the falls and fly out again. A night in the very simple accommodation near the falls lets you see sunrise and sunset there and may leave you almost alone. Nearby, Atta Rainforest Lodge, a community-owned lodge, offers a more comfortable base.
The flight itself, over unbroken forest, is part of the experience, and it is normally combined with a visit to Orinduik Falls. Weather affects flights, so keep your schedule flexible. The falls are at their fullest after the rains in May to July.
