Cara Lodge

Georgetown

A historic colonial-era hotel in the center of Georgetown, often the base for stays before and after the interior.

Georgetown, the capital, is a low, green city laid out by the Dutch and the British, with wide canals, the Stabroek Market's iron clock tower and some of the largest wooden buildings in the world, including St George's Cathedral. It has a lively food scene that mixes Indian, Chinese, Creole and Amerindian cooking, a botanical garden with manatees and a long seawall where families gather in the evenings.

Where to stay

The historic option is Cara Lodge, in a colonial building in the center that tour operators often book for two nights around trips to the interior. Newer hotels include a design-minded Aiden by Best Western with a rooftop terrace and a boutique-style AC Hotel by Marriott near the airport. King's Hotel & Residences is central, near Promenade Gardens.

Good to know

Most interior trips start from Georgetown, so plan a night before and after. Take taxis after dark, and check current official travel advice. The best months are February to April and September to November.
