Upper Suriname River
A resort on the Kabalebo River in western Suriname with five types of accommodation, from the Main Lodge to the adventurous Boskamp.
The Upper Suriname River winds through the rainforest south of the Brokopondo reservoir, past villages of the Saramaccan Maroons, descendants of enslaved Africans who escaped the plantations and built their own communities. The river runs in rapids, and the lodges sit on islands among them. The journey takes you from the road to the river, then onward by dugout canoe, which is part of the experience.
Awarradam is an eco-resort on an island at the foot of the Awarradam rapids, about 225 kilometers from Paramaribo, run by local people with staff from nearby villages. Power is solar and there is no mobile network or Wi-Fi. Danpaati River Lodge has cabanas with en-suite showers, electricity, verandas and mosquito nets on an island overlooking the river. Kabalebo is a separate resort in the west.
Tour operators sell three- to five-day packages; one lists Danpaati from about €418 per person for three days. Activities include canoe trips, swimming in the rapids and guided jungle walks.
