Juayúa (Ruta de las Flores)

Juayúa is a pretty mountain town in the coffee highlands of western El Salvador, anchored by a white church with a dark Black Christ and a weekend food festival where families grill, fry and sell regional dishes in the street. It is the center of the Ruta de las Flores, a string of villages linked by murals, craft stalls and coffee farms.

Where to stay

Hotels here are small and personal: a few boutique places with gardens, terraces and private parking, some adults-only, plus a larger guesthouse with a pool outside the center. Rooms in town are close to the food fair, so ask about noise at weekends.

Good to know

The waterfalls known as Los Chorros de la Calera are a short drive. The weekend food festival is busiest on Saturday and Sunday, while weekdays are quiet. Altitude keeps the evenings cool. The nearby towns of Ataco and Apaneca make easy half-day additions.
