Santa Ana
A Santa Ana hotel with a pool, garden, terrace, bar and restaurant.
Santa Ana is El Salvador's second city, a cathedral-and-theater town of neo-Gothic and neoclassical buildings around a central plaza. It is the base for the Santa Ana volcano, whose crater lake can be reached in a morning's hike, and for Lake Coatepeque, the Maya ruins of Tazumal and the Ruta de las Flores.
The best stays are on the hills above the city and in the center, around the Catedral Metropolitana. A mountain lodge a short drive away has a garden terrace and a broad rating from guests, while a hotel in the city has a pool, garden and restaurant. Budget hostels offer an alternative.
The city is hot by day, so plan walks early. Santa Ana is about an hour from San Salvador by road. Volcano hikes need to be booked with the park rangers in the morning, and weather clears early. Check current official travel advice and plan your arrival in daylight.
