Muskoka
A grand 19th-century lakeside resort on Lake Rosseau, with a long veranda and a sandy beach.
Muskoka, about two hours north of Toronto, is a region of hundreds of lakes set among the granite and pine of the Canadian Shield. It has been the summer retreat of wealthy Torontonians since the 19th century, and grand boathouses, wooden steamships and Muskoka chairs on the docks are its symbols. Algonquin Provincial Park lies just to the northeast.
The big lakes, Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph, have historic resorts and inns on their shores. Huntsville, Port Carling and Bracebridge are the main towns.
Summer is the main season, and autumn colors are spectacular in late September and early October. Many smaller places close in winter.
