Lunenburg was founded in 1753 and is one of the best-preserved British colonial towns in North America, a UNESCO World Heritage site of brightly painted wooden houses climbing up from the harbor. It is the home port of the schooner Bluenose II and has a long shipbuilding and fishing tradition, celebrated at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic.
The Old Town is compact, and most of its inns are in historic houses within a few minutes' walk of the waterfront. Rooms with harbor views are worth asking for.
Summer and early autumn are the best seasons, and many inns close in winter. Lunenburg is about an hour and a quarter from Halifax, and Mahone Bay and its three churches are nearby.
