Los Roques
An Italian-owned and run posada a few blocks from the beach, praised for its food, service and roof terrace.
Los Roques is a national park of around 350 islands and cays on a coral atoll, with water the color of glass and wide sand flats. Most visitors arrive by a small plane from Caracas and stay in the single village on Gran Roque, where sand streets lead to a handful of posadas, a lighthouse and the shore. Boat trips take guests to snorkel and swim on empty cays.
The posadas are small, owner-run and generally sold on a full-board basis. Among those named: a Sicilian-run posada with an Italian-influenced restaurant, one with about 11 rooms and a split-level rooftop terrace, an Italian-owned inn with a roof terrace and a good kitchen, and several tiny places with four or five rooms near the plaza. One guide puts boutique posadas at roughly $200 to $400 a night on a full-board basis, though that figure is unconfirmed.
Many posadas aren't on booking sites, so contact them directly. December through April is peak season and sells out months ahead. Check flights and the current rules for visiting before you book.
