Colonia Tovar was founded in 1843 by German settlers from the Black Forest, and its steep, flower-hung streets still have half-timbered houses, German bakeries and breweries and a Gothic-style church. At about 1,800 meters, the air is cool, and the village is a popular weekend escape from Caracas, about two hours away.
Posada Don Elicio, in the La Ballesta sector, is described as one of the best posadas in the village, with individual chalets or suites with outdoor terraces, a restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine and mountain views, by reservation only. Hotel Selva Negra is one of the oldest hotels, built in true Alpine style with chalets and an excellent restaurant. Hotel Bergland has 15 rooms and four private cabins, and Cabañas Hessen is in the historic center.
Weekends bring crowds and traffic, and midweek visits are quiet. Wikivoyage listings may be dated, so confirm each property is open. Try the sausages, strawberries and local beer, and take a light jacket for the evenings.
