Tanna
The island's only up-market resort, with about ten thatched bungalows with high ceilings and traditional decor on the west coast near the airport.
Tanna is the most visited of Vanuatu's outer islands, thanks to Mount Yasur, an active volcano that erupts almost constantly and can be reached by a short walk to the crater rim at dusk. The island also has black-sand beaches, waterfalls, a coastal reef with turtles and villages that maintain strong kastom traditions, including the John Frum movement.
There is a range of simple bungalows and a few small resorts, mostly run by local families or by long-resident expatriates, near the volcano and along the coast. Tree-house bungalows in the forest are a Tanna specialty. White Grass Ocean Resort is the up-market choice, and Tanna Evergreen Lodge is a smaller, locally owned alternative.
Flights from Port Vila are short but can be delayed by weather, and the volcano's alert level can limit access, so check with operators locally. Roads are rough and 4WD transfers are standard. Bring cash, as cards are not widely accepted.
