Malekula is the second-largest island in Vanuatu, a mountainous, jungle-covered place with some of the country's most distinct traditional cultures, including the Big Nambas and Small Nambas peoples. It is known for its carved slit drums, ceremonial dances and nearby islets such as Uripiv and Vao, and the Maskelynes, whose reefs are popular for diving.
Accommodation is small and local: village bungalows and a few simple guesthouses at Lakatoro, the main town, and along the coast. Bungalows are owned and managed by local families, with cooked meals and basic amenities. Local operators arrange guides.
Malekula is reached by flights from Port Vila to Norsup or Southwest Bay, and by sea from Santo. Roads are rough and distances are slow, so keep an open schedule. The cultural festivals and dances are best arranged in advance with a guide.
